Why 8 Weeks Matters for a Canadian Move

Most Canadians start packing 2 weeks before move day and regret it. Here's why 8 weeks is the minimum for a smooth move:

This timeline walks through every one of those tasks, week by week, with the exact Canadian rules that apply.

What's in This Guide

Your 8 Week Timeline

Check off each task as you complete it.

WEEK 8
Research & Budget
The cheapest movers book out now.
  • Get 3 mover quotes from Canadian Association of Movers certified companies.Non-CAM movers are the top source of hostage load scams in Canada.
  • Run a moving cost calculator to compare full-service, portable container, and DIY truck rental.
  • Set your moving budget including deposit, fuel surcharge, packing supplies, and first-month utility deposits.
  • Decide your moving date. Mid-month Tuesday through Thursday is cheapest. Avoid month-end and weekends when rates jump 20 to 30%.
  • Start decluttering. Every box you don't move saves weight, money, and time.
  • Create a moving binder for receipts, quotes, contracts, and inventory lists. Keep it with you on moving day.
  • Research your new neighbourhood: closest pharmacy, grocery, walk-in clinic, transit stop, schools.
WEEK 7
Book the Mover
Lock in the quote in writing.
  • Sign the moving contract. Get a binding quote, not an estimate. Estimates can balloon on move day.
  • Confirm insurance coverage. Basic Released Value Protection is only 60 cents per pound. A $2,000 TV at 20 lbs pays $12. Buy Full Value Protection for anything over $500.
  • Ask about hidden fees in writing: stair fees, long carry fees, shuttle fees, fuel surcharges, packing material markup.
  • Verify Canadian Association of Movers membership. Ask for their CAM number, check it on mover.net.
  • Book elevator reservations at both condo buildings if applicable. Most buildings charge $100 to $300 and book out weeks in advance.
  • Book parking permits for the moving truck with your city, usually $30 to $50 per day.
  • Arrange pet and child care for moving day.
WEEK 6
Notify Schools & Employer
The week most Canadians forget.
  • Request school records transfer. Takes 2 to 4 weeks in most provinces. Contact both current and new schools.
  • Register kids at the new school. Many boards require in-person enrolment with proof of address.
  • Notify employer and HR. Update payroll address for T4 delivery.
  • Book time off for moving week. Minimum 2 days before, 2 days after.
  • Start eating from the freezer. Movers won't take frozen or refrigerated food.
  • Transfer prescriptions. Talk to your pharmacy about transferring, or ask for a 3-month supply to bridge the gap.
  • Arrange vet transfer if moving far. Request pet records.
WEEK 5
Supplies & Declutter
Source free boxes. Purge ruthlessly.
  • Get free moving boxes: LCBO, Costco, Dollarama, grocery stores, bookstores. Ask for "weekday mornings when we get deliveries".
  • Buy packing supplies: packing tape (6+ rolls), bubble wrap, paper, permanent markers, mattress bags, dish packs.
  • Do your full declutter. Use a room-by-room purge list. Four piles: keep, donate, sell, toss.
  • List items on Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji. Price to sell fast. Aim to clear everything 10 days before move day.
  • Schedule donation pickups with Diabetes Canada (1-800-505-5525), Salvation Army, or Value Village. Book early.
  • Start using up consumables: pantry, cleaning products, toiletries.
  • Book hazardous waste drop-off. Most municipalities offer free drop-off days for paint, propane, chemicals.
WEEK 4
Start Packing Non-Essentials
Books, decor, off-season clothes.
  • Pack books, decor, artwork, seasonal clothing. Heavy items in small boxes (max 25 lbs each).
  • Label every box with: room, contents summary, and a unique number.
  • Keep a master box inventory spreadsheet or notebook. Note which boxes contain valuables.
  • Photograph electronics setups before unplugging so you can reconnect cables.
  • Back up important computer files to cloud or external drive.
  • Digitize important paper documents: birth certificates, passports, insurance, medical records.
  • Service your vehicle if driving to new home.
  • Order internet installation for new home. Fiber and new builds need 14 to 21 days lead time.
WEEK 3
Utilities & Canadian Address Changes
Federal and provincial paperwork starts now.
  • Schedule utility transfers: hydro, gas, water, internet. Request disconnect day after move, connect day before.
  • Update address with Canada Revenue Agency. Log in to CRA My Account (immediate) or call 1-800-959-8281.
  • Update Service Canada: EI, CPP, OAS, Canada Child Benefit, Canadian Dental Care Plan. Online via My Service Canada Account.
  • Start Canada Post Mail Forwarding. Takes 3 business days to activate. $110 for 6 months. First Class only, magazines forwarded 60 days.
  • Notify bank, credit cards, insurance, investments. Most allow online address updates.
  • Update auto insurance. Premiums change with postal code. Never drive uninsured.
  • Update home insurance. Start new policy day of move. Never let coverage lapse.
  • Update doctor, dentist, vet. Transfer records if moving far.
  • Subscription services: Amazon, Netflix, meal kits, gym, magazines, any recurring deliveries.
WEEK 2
Pack the Rest
Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom basics.
  • Pack kitchen except daily essentials. Dishes wrapped in packing paper, stacked vertically in dish-pack boxes.
  • Pack bathroom except toiletries for moving week. Liquids in zip-top bags to prevent spills.
  • Drain fuel from lawn mowers, BBQs, snow blowers. Movers won't take anything with fuel.
  • Dispose of propane, paint, chemicals, batteries. Municipal hazardous waste depot only.
  • Confirm moving day details with mover: time, truck size, access, payment method.
  • Confirm utility connect/disconnect dates with providers.
  • Withdraw cash for tips. $20 to $40 per mover for a long day is standard in Canada.
  • Do a final donation run for anything you decided not to move.
WEEK 1
Moving Week
Essentials box, final walkthrough, moving day.
  • Pack an essentials box to keep with you: toiletries, medication, phone chargers, 2 days of clothes, coffee, snacks, basic tools, paper towels, toilet paper.
  • Pack a "first night" box: bedding, pillows, towels, shower curtain, cleaning supplies.
  • Defrost and clean the fridge and freezer 48 hours before move.
  • Confirm arrival at new home: keys, access codes, elevator booking.
  • Moving day: be present when loading and unloading. Check inventory sheet before signing.
  • Take photos of every valuable before the movers load it. Timestamped proof for any damage claim.
  • Tip the crew: $20 to $40 per mover for a good job is standard in Canada.
  • Do a final walkthrough of your old place. Check every closet, cupboard, drawer, outlet.
  • Hand over keys to landlord, new owner, or real estate agent.
Critical Deadlines After Moving In Several Canadian deadlines start the day you move in, not when you feel settled. See the provincial table below. Miss them and you pay fines, lose health coverage, or have insurance claims denied.
